How to Start Running (and Stick to It!) in the New Year

Running Bear |

Hello, fellow runners-to-be!

If you’ve been eyeing the New Year as the perfect time to start running, you’re not alone. Running is one of the simplest and most rewarding ways to stay fit, clear your mind, and enjoy the great outdoors. But if the thought of lacing up for your first run feels a bit daunting, don’t worry—we’ve got you covered!

Here’s our friendly guide to help you start running and (most importantly) keep going.

1. Start Where You Are (Not Where You Think You Should Be)

It’s easy to compare yourself to seasoned runners, but everyone starts somewhere. If you can’t run a kilometre without stopping—no problem! Begin with a mix of walking and jogging. The popular “Couch to 5K” approach is a fantastic way to ease in. Remember, progress is progress, no matter how small.

We host Learn 2 Run courses from our Alderley Edge store, these are completely free - to find out about our next course, email us at info@runningbear.co.uk

Pro Tip: Your first goal isn’t to be fast—it’s to be consistent.

2. Get the Right Gear

Comfortable, supportive shoes are non-negotiable. Ill-fitting trainers can lead to blisters, aches, and injuries that make running less enjoyable. Pop into our shop, and we’ll help you find your perfect pair. Don’t forget moisture-wicking clothing to stay comfortable, especially in the unpredictable UK weather!

Must-Have Accessories:

A good pair of running socks (yes, they make a difference).

A lightweight jacket for those chilly mornings.

A trusty water bottle or running belt.

3. Find Your Motivation

Why are you running? To feel fitter? To destress? To train for a race? Keeping your “why” in mind can help on days when you’d rather stay under the duvet.

Make It Fun:

Create a killer running playlist.

Download a running app to track your progress.

Join a local running group or bring a buddy along for accountability.

4. Pace Yourself (Literally)

One of the biggest mistakes new runners make is going too hard, too soon. Keep your pace slow enough that you can still chat—no need to sprint. Trust us, it’s much more enjoyable this way.

A Good Rule of Thumb: The “talk test”—if you can hold a conversation, you’re running at a sustainable pace.

5. Celebrate the Small Wins

Completed your first kilometre? High five! Ran consistently for two weeks? You’re a rockstar! Every run, no matter how short, is a step forward. Celebrate those little victories—they’ll keep you motivated for the bigger milestones ahead.

6. Mix It Up

Keep things interesting by exploring new routes or adding variety to your routine. Park runs, trails, or treadmill sessions—each offers something unique. You can even try intervals (short bursts of faster running) to spice things up.

7. Don’t Let Setbacks Stop You

We all miss runs or have off days—it’s normal. The key is to get back out there when you can. Running isn’t about perfection; it’s about persistence.

Remember: Rest days are just as important as running days. Listen to your body and give it time to recover.

8. Reward Yourself

Set mini-goals and treat yourself when you reach them. Maybe it’s a new pair of running leggings, a post-run coffee, or upgrading to a fancy GPS watch

Whatever your goal is with running, remember above all to try and enjoy it! It is a hobby and should be fun! If you have any questions or want any advice, why not pop in-store and see us, or give us a call at 01625 582130.
